Clemson launches Zimride ridesharing network

Date Published: February 1, 2012

Clemson University has made carpooling easier for students, faculty and staff with the launch of Zimride, a social network for ride sharing. Zimride uses Facebook integration to allow users to find friends to share commutes or one-time rides. Students, faculty and staff were notified in an email from Clemson Zimride on Monday, Jan. 30, that the service is now online.

The private network will make it easier for people to share rides to and from campus and elsewhere, thereby reducing traffic and parking congestion. Clemson is the first college or university in South Carolina to use the program.

“We are excited to offer a program that will allow our community to easily find and share rides,” said Dan Hofmann, director of parking and transportation services. “Zimride’s solution is appealing to our students, faculty and staff, which will enable us to reduce congestion and make campus commuting more efficient for everyone.”

Zimride has developed a custom rideshare solution to serve Clemson’s campus population. Through Zimride’s web-based interface, faculty, staff and students can find others with similar commuting patterns or one-time rides.

As a social network platform with optional Facebook integration, users can view profiles for common networks, interests and friends before deciding to share a ride. Zimride users create profiles that show their favorite music, radio stations and even smoking preferences.

All University students, faculty and staff can access the free Clemson Zimride network at http://zimride.clemson.edu. The private system requires a Clemson userID and password to gain access.

Zimride is the largest online social rideshare community in North America with over 350,000 users.  Zimride has implemented private rideshare communities for more than 80 universities and companies including Stanford, UCLA, University of Michigan, Cornell University, Jet Blue and CIGNA.
