On September 23, 2012, approximately 500 family, friends and colleagues from AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International celebrated Jerry Trapnell’s retirement as the first executive vice president and chief accreditation officer by surprising him with an endowed scholarship in his name. The event marked the opening of the AACSB Annual Accreditation Conference held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Atlanta, Ga.
Clemson alumnus Joe Turner ’71 and ’77, who attended the event and is the co-founder, chairman and CEO of First Sun Management Corporation, one of the largest Wendy’s franchise owners with 50+ restaurants in the Southeast, said, “Jerry is one of the most forward-thinking, dedicated and loyal alumnus Clemson has graduated thus far. It is a great compliment to him as well as Clemson that Jerry was asked to lead this high profile, internationally prestigious organization. It came to me as no surprise that his colleagues at AACSB International, along with family and friends, would want to create an endowed scholarship in his name. He is a credit to his profession and to Clemson University.”
Prior to accepting the position with AACSB International, Trapnell served as dean of the College of Business and Behavioral Science (CBBS) at Clemson University until 2004. As dean of CBBS, he was dedicated to holding Clemson’s business school to the highest standards. In addition, he served as director and professor of accountancy at Clemson’s School of Accountancy (now, School of Accountancy and Finance) from 1986–93. From 1976–86 he was professor of accounting in the Department of Accounting at Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia, and a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Clemson University.
Once the Jerry Trapnell Endowed Scholarship matures, it will be awarded to a student within CBBS. In the interim, the college has created an annual scholarship in Trapnell’s name so that aid can be awarded in spring 2013.
